Because of its strength, Ben's 100 isn't recommended for the children in the back garden or for mums-to-be. It's for the outdoor type, when the outdoors is also inhabited by little nasties. Apply just enough to cover exposed skin and/or clothing. Do not use under clothing. Frequesnt reapplication and saturation is unnecessary for effectivness. Do not spray directly on face or in enclosed areas. Do not inhale. Avoid overexposure. Do not apply to the eyes and mouth or to the hands of young children. Do not allow children to handle this product. Apply sparingly around the ears. To apply to face spray on hands and rub on. Repeat as needed. For use on clothing: Apply to clothing before wearing and let air dry. Use on non-synthetic hats, T-shirts, socks, cotton trousers, jackets, vests or bandana. For ticks, apply to shoe tops, socks and around openings in clothing. Wash articles of clothing after protection is no longer needed.

Also there is no plateau in effectiveness, as duration in protection increases with concentration to the highest concentration of DEET tested. HIGHER MARGIN OF SAFETY FOR CONSUMER Consumers, in general, fail to apply repellent uniformly which adversely affects the duration of protection. Figures quoted reflect laboratory conditions in contrast to those which consumers may be exposed to e.g, humidity, sun, water, wind, physical exertion etc. Thus, higher concentrations of DEET afford a higher margin of safety for the average consumer. This is especially important in tick-infested areas. LESS DEET ABSORPTION WITH 100% * Most lower concentration DEET products are formulated in alcohol (*Ben’s 30 is water-based). Alcohol accelerates the absorption of DEET across the layers of the human skin resulting in a significantly greater percentage of the DEET application being absorbed than using straight 100% DEET. Paradoxically frequent application of lower concentration DEET products may lead to more total product absorbed than if one application of 100% DEET is used. LESS ‘SMELL’ WITH 100% 'Neat' DEET has very little smell. The formulation in alcohol is the cause of the stronger chemical smell. DEET – WELL RESEARCHED AND FINE SAFETY PROFILE A 5-year compilation of data (1985-89) from the American Association of Poison Control Centers showed that: There are very few incidents involving DEET products. Out of the millions of uses of DEET products only 0.16 of 1% of the calls made to the Poison Control Centers involved DEET products. Of these, the majority were inconsequential. There was no correlation between the number or severity of incidents and the concentration of DEET in products. RECENT CLINICAL TRIALS The New England Journal of Medicine July 4th 2002 published a paper by Fradin & Day entitled ‘Comparative Efficacy of Insect Repellents against Mosquito Bites’. They concluded that ‘currently available non-DEET repellents do not provide protection for durations similar to those of DEET-based repellents and cannot be relied on to provide prolonged protection in environments where mosquito-borne diseases are a substantial threat.’ Commenting on DEET’s safety profile, the authors say that fewer than 50 cases of serious toxic effects have been documented since 1960. Many of these cases involved long-term, heavy, frequent, or whole-body application of DEET. Interestingly they reported very poor results with IR3535 (now in Jungle Formula and Mijex Extra). They also reported that wristbands impregnated with DEET or citronella offered no protection at all. Bayrepel, now in Autan, was not tested presumably because it was not available in the USA at that time. However work done in the UK at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine suggests that Bayrepel is on a par with IR3535. The American Academy of Paediatrics now say up to 30% DEET is suitable for children. The 3 leading brands (Autan, Jungle Formula (except ‘Extra’) and Mosi-guard) do not contain DEET. Two of these brands built their reputation on being DEET-based and recent evidence questions their efficacy versus DEET. There has been an increase in Europe of tick-borne encephalitis. The prevalence of Lyme Disease, most widely associated with ticks, in Europe is felt to be ‘understated’ by many experts. 100% DEET is reckoned to be the most effective repellent to combat ticks.
